Setting up an e-commerce website for credit card payment processing can require the coordination of several vendors. The main components of payment processing include a shopping cart, gateway and merchant account. However, there are vendors available that handle either one or all of the components.

If the business is not interested in adding the shopping cart software to its own website, it can use a hosted shopping cart service. There are generally two types of hosted shopping carts, one type includes payment processing and the other requires the business to have a separate vendor. If the business decides to have a separate vendor, there is a choice of using a payment processor or having a merchant account.
