Making a business successful was never easy; and dynamic markets compound the problem. The techniques, processes and personal skills that must be deployed successfully, are many and varied – and you regularly have to tackle new situations. What can act to keep you updated and able to perform well whatever is demanded of you? There is, unsurprisingly, no magic formula, but consider one approach: one that is low cost, practical and useful – and often fun.
Recruit a mentor
Let us be clear as to exactly how mentoring works. A mentor is someone who exercises a low key and informal developmental role - one of immediate practical value. Luckily one of the motivations for many people in business is the satisfaction of helping people develop and seeing them excel.
The ideal mentor is sufficiently senior to have knowledge, experience and clout. The process must appeal to them, and they need to have time to invest in to the process. Such time need not be great. The key thing is to have the willingness to spend some time regularly helping someone else. If your own boss and your mentor is the same person, that might be ideal, but it is not essential, indeed some would define a mentor as someone who is specifically not your boss. Usually, if such a relationship lasts, it will start out one way - they help you – but may well become more two-way over the years; perhaps the person on the mentor side makes the decision to help rather expecting this.
