A VPN (virtual private network) allows one computer to access a private network such as a corporate or university network. VPNs use the internet instead of a physical connection to the correct network. Cisco has released many VPN solutions over the years, which makes choosing the right Cisco VPN client an overly complicated process.
Cisco VPN Client 4.x and 5.x
Version 4 and 5 Cisco VPN clients have been used for a number of years. If the user is accessing an older Cisco VPN solution, this client may be the one and only VPN client solution available.
Cisco VPN Client 4.x and 5.x is available for the following operating systems:
- 32 bit Microsoft Windows operating systems
- Solaris Sparc (Solaris x86 not supported)
- Linux x86 (does not work on dual core 64 bit systems with SMP turned on)
- Mac OS X Intel
- Mac OS X Power PC
It's best to download the most recent version available for the correct operating system. Do not confuse the Cisco VPN Client with the Cisco AnyConnect client, which only works with Cisco's AnyConnect SSL VPN products.
